Career Magistrate Induction Course

The Judicial Training Institute is holding a 5 day Career Magistrate induction course for new Career Magistrates. The induction course has been designed and structured to inculcate in participants the values of judicial independence, impartiality, competence, efficiency and effectiveness.

The objectives of the course is

1.       To prepare Career Magistrates to perform their judicial and administrative functions effectively and with confidence.

2.       To acquire knowledge in the practical aspects of the law, procedure and evidence required by Career Magistrates to try cases competently as well as administer courts efficiently and effectively.

3.       To enable participants to understand and appreciate the nature and concept of the profession they are about to join, by inculcating in them the values and attributes of judicial life, to think and to act judicially.

1.       Overview of the Role of a Magistrate in the District Court.

2.       Overview of the jurisdiction of the District Court and Review processes.

4.       The role of the Registrar and other officers in the court.

8.       The juvenile Court: Practice, law and Procedure.

9.       The Family Tribunal: Practice, Law and Procedure.

10.   Decision Making Process.

11.   Judgment Writing Exercises.

12.   Criminal law and Procedure in the District Courts.

13.   Punishment and General Sentencing.

14.   Judicial Ethics.

15.   Talk on the Association of Judges and Magistrates of Ghana (AMG) .

16.   Orientation on the Judicial Service: Administration, Structures and Procedures.

17.   Financial Matters: What the Career Magistrates Need to Know and
